MEET THE CANDIDATE

Katy has been a member of the SSSD school board since 2017 and has recently served as the interim President as part of her role as Vice President. With 20 years of experience as a chemical engineer, Katy brings a logical approach and extensive project management skills to the school board. Katy dedicates herself to understanding issues at their core and works hard to search out the community’s shared values.

“Although we may not always agree on how best to do so, the entire community is committed to ensuring the success of our children not only academically but as future members of Steamboat and beyond. I truly believe that by recognizing this common ground, we will be able to work together to continue to provide growth opportunities for all students.” – Katy Lee

Among her accomplishments these last four years, Katy is especially proud of the integral role she played in making huge strides in improving our school facilities – from knocking on doors for the bond campaign to weekly meetings with the general contractor to celebrating at the recent ribbon cutting ceremony at Sleeping Giant School. Since 2017, Katy has served on the district’s Executive Committee. This is the guiding body for our construction projects. She feels this is where her experience in project management has been most beneficial to the board.

“Helping to improve our existing schools and bring Sleeping Giant School to life for our students and community has been the most rewarding part of my school board experience. With the support of our local taxpayers, we are making significant improvements in the learning environments at each of our schools. It’s exciting to be part of the process from conceptual design to final turnover to our staff.” – Katy Lee

Katy’s experience on the board these four years has given her in-depth knowledge of topics ranging from school finance to how boards across the state approach policy. She has served on the BOCES board, participated in collective bargaining and the Education Fund Board, and attended Colorado Association of School Board legislative meetings. Under a COVID-19 exception, she spent many days last year substituting at SCE, SPE, SSMS, and SSHS.

“Substitute teaching was really an eye-opening experience. I have so much respect for our educators’ ability to handle the many different simultaneous demands in their classroom day in and day out. Steamboat is privileged to have such high-caliber staff at all levels.” – Katy Lee

Katy considers herself lucky to have called Steamboat home since 2014. A proud parent of three, she is mom to two graduates and a current sophomore at Steamboat Springs High School. Katy’s spent countless hours backstage at school theatre productions, painting sets, making costumes and glue gunning anything not meant to move. She believes strongly in giving back to her community. In addition to her school board service, she and her family have raised three service dogs for Canine Companions for Independence and are looking forward to raising their next puppy.
